Top 14 Home Remodel Design Trends for 2025

Written by Tommy Mitchell | Jan 9, 2025 12:00:00 PM

How do homeowners make design choices for home remodeling in 2025? Many are researching online at Houzz or Pinterest, and also using analog methods like a simple look through design magazines. In the end, they are looking for ideas that inspire them as they map out ideas for the ideal home renovation.

As a design-build firm, we are always digging deep looking at trends in the trades, and the features for which our clients are asking our expertise to bring to fruition. Here are the top 10 design trends we are seeing for 2025.

1. Reinventing Outdoor Spaces

Homeowners are expecting more and more to not just have a yard, but to treat the yard as an integrated extension of the home. Outdoor living in New England means creating space that can function in warmer months and extend your enjoyment of the space throughout the year. Below is an example of blending outdoor seating and kitchen with landscape design that pays attention to creating interest in all seasons.

2. Multi-Use Spaces

Where are the potential multi-use areas in your home? Or how about your kitchen? Making sure there are enough outlets and space at the island means cooking and homework, sending out that last email for work can happen in the same space.

3. Kitchens – Niche Features Like a Coffee Station

This year, kitchens are becoming more and more the hub of activity in your home. A dedicated beverage station keeps non-cooks and guests in one area and out of the way of the food prep.

4. Kitchens - Range Alcove

Range alcoves are making a stylish comeback, combining classic elegance with modern functionality to create the ultimate cook’s station. For discerning homeowners who value both aesthetics and practicality, range alcoves offer a timeless focal point in the kitchen while providing clever storage solutions. Framed by custom cabinetry, these alcoves not only enhance the visual appeal of the space but also keep essential cooking tools, spices, and utensils within easy reach, streamlining meal prep for busy families. Thoughtfully designed with high-end finishes like natural stone backsplashes and statement range hoods, range alcoves blend seamlessly into luxury kitchens, delivering a harmonious balance of beauty and utility. This trend is perfect for those who see the kitchen as the heart of the home and want a design that reflects both their lifestyle and their appreciation for timeless craftsmanship.

5. Ceiling Treatments

Ceiling treatments are emerging as a standout design trend, transforming often-overlooked ceilings into key elements of luxury home design. For discerning homeowners seeking to make their spaces feel warmer and more inviting, these treatments add texture and visual interest while elevating the overall aesthetic. From wood paneling and coffered ceilings to bold, patterned wallpapers and custom moldings, ceiling designs can create a sense of depth and character that enhances the ambiance of any room. Perfect for living areas, dining rooms, or primary suites, these thoughtful upgrades reflect an appreciation for fine craftsmanship and attention to detail, helping to create a cohesive, high-end look that feels both sophisticated and welcoming.

6. Turning Primary Bathrooms into Day Spas

7. Bathroom - Shower Rooms

Shower rooms are redefining luxury, combining all the essential shower features with the elegance of a freestanding tub for the ultimate spa-inspired retreat. Perfect for homeowners looking to maximize space in their bathroom, these designs balance functionality and indulgence. By integrating sleek glass enclosures with open layouts, shower rooms create an expansive feel, while the freestanding tub becomes a stunning centerpiece. Thoughtful additions like rain showerheads, soothing natural stone finishes, and ambient lighting complete the spa-like atmosphere. For those enhancing their primary suite, shower rooms deliver unmatched luxury, blending modern aesthetics with timeless comfort to elevate both your home’s style and value.

8. Enhancing Mudroom/Laundry Rooms

In 2025 a mudroom/laundry room does not have to be where messes go to accumulate. With forethought on organization and utility, a mudroom and laundry room can fulfill its function with style.

9. An Eye Toward Historical Colors

Historical does not mean “antiquated.” Use classic, rich tones to create pops of color in your renovated spaces.

10. Designing for Sustainability

Older New England homes often have spectacular features. There is no need to demo unique features like built-in cabinets or other architectural gems. Refresh or repurpose those areas that make your home uniquely yours.

11. Woven and Mesh Cabinet Doors

Woven and mesh cabinet doors are becoming popular, offering a unique way to add texture, depth, and functionality to any room. For homeowners who value both style and practicality, these cabinets bring visual interest and a touch of artisanal charm to kitchens, living spaces, and even media rooms. The breathable design is perfect for housing stereo components or other electronics, allowing proper airflow while maintaining a polished look. Available in a variety of materials, from natural cane to metal mesh, these doors blend seamlessly into both modern and traditional spaces, creating a textured, sophisticated feel that reflects an appreciation for thoughtful, personalized details. Perfect for those who see their home as a reflection of their taste, woven and mesh cabinetry delivers both beauty and utility.

12. Aging In Place – When Renovating Look Ahead to The Future

When renovating a bathroom, a curb-less shower can look great while being a feature people look for to age in place. Take the long view in 2025 and think about how you will use space now and in the future.

13. Transitional Look – Classic Design That Is Fresh and Updated

Retaining classic charm does not mean things need to look “old fashioned.” Timeless design is created when traditional details are blended with modern convenience and sensibilities. This combination is very much on-trend for 2025.

14. Artisan Elements

Renovating your home is an opportunity to feature local craftsmanship and other artisan objects and materials. Elements like hand-crafted tiles, wood shelving, and natural stone can add character to newly constructed areas of your home.
